From the Editor:

Welcome to our new format! Many, many mahalos to Dongping Zheng (new faculty and SLS webmaster) for administering this change in the SLS Letter.

I hope you enjoy the blogging option. I used to believe that the SLS Letter could only be as good as submissions received, but that’s true no longer. As you read through, perhaps you’ll notice a puka or two (your submission??) and will be inspired to blog. This may be more effective than Facebook for ESL/SLS alumni to communicate with one another…

Thank you for all your submissions. Some exciting, innovative articles include coverage of the SLS 40th anniversary (Department News), personal appeals for funding from our Distinguished Alumni Award co-recipients, Jonathan Hull and Susan Proctor (SLS Scholarship Funds), a personal eulogy from Beth Ruze to Dave Rickard (Department News/Obituary), an interview with Bob Gibson by MA student Mian Cui (Department News), a report by E. Nageswara Rao on a visit by alumni from the 60s (Alumni/ESL Alumni Visit), and a self-introduction by researcher & AGC student Yoko Uchida, PhD (Student News).

I will send out a call for the next edition of the Letter, but in the meantime, blog away! Or, as always, you can keep in touch with me and the Department by emailing <bcooney@hawaii.edu>

Warmest aloha,

Barbara Leigh Cooney
